Berkeley University research programs.
Research at Berkeley University is conducted in several types of organizations - academic departments, institutes and centers, museums, and field stations.- The academic department offers courses and grant degrees, as well as sometimes housing laboratories and other research infrastructure. They are organized according to academic discipline (eg Sociology, Economics, Physics).
- Research Centers and Institutions, sometimes referred to as Organized Research Units (ORU), are organized around a broad topic of substantive research (eg international affairs, information technology, environment). As such, they draw into the research programs of their faculties and students from various departments and disciplines. Berkeley has more than 100 such research units.
- The museum also functions as an important research site on campus. Berkeley has eight museums with strong collections in various fields, including anthropology, paleontology and entomology.
- Berkeley also manages a number of biological field stations. Most are in remote locations in California that are ideal for studies of ecosystems, botany, zoology, and forestry.
