Berkeley University overview

UC Berkeley, Berkeley, Cal, or California or the University of California, Berkeley are public research universities in the United States. It was founded in the city of Berkeley in 1868 and serves as the flagship institution of ten research universities affiliated with the University of California system. Berkeley has grown to teach more than 40,000 students in around 350 undergraduate and postgraduate programs covering various disciplines.

Berkeley is one of 14 founding members of the American University Association, with $789 million in R & D expenditure in the fiscal year ended June 30, 2015. Today, Berkeley maintains a close relationship with three United States Department of Energy National Laboratory Laboratories - Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Laboratory Lawrence Livermore National and Los Alamos National Laboratories - and is home to many institutions, including the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute and the Space Science Laboratory. In October 2018, Berkeley alumni, faculty members and researchers included 107 Nobel winners, 25 Turing Awards winners, and 14 Fields Medalists. Berkeley University has also won 45 MacArthur Fellowships, 9 Wolf Prizes, 14 Pulitzer Prizes and 207 Olympic medals (117 gold, 51 silver and 39 bronze), 20 Academy Awards. Ernest Lawrence discovered the cyclotron at Berkeley, in 1930, based on a place where UC Berkeley researchers together with Berkeley Lab found or jointly found 16 chemical elements from periodic table - above from any university in the world. During the 1940s, Berkeley physicist J. R. Oppenheimer, "Father of the Atomic Bomb," led the Manhattan project to make the first atomic bomb. In the 1960s, Berkeley was famous for its Free Speech Movement and the Anti-Vietnam War Movement led by its students. In the 21st century, Berkeley has become one of the leading universities in producing entrepreneurship and its alumni have established a large number of companies throughout the world.

For 2018–19, Berkeley is ranked 5th internationally in the Academic Ranking of World Universities, ranked 27th in the QS World University Rankings, 15th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, 4th in US News & Global University Ranking World Report , and the 6th most famous University in the Reputation Times World Ranking of Higher Education.
