Colwrit 1 Written English Grammar and Vocabulary (2 units)
Conditions offered: Spring 2019, Autumn 2018, Spring 2018. This course is intended to be a course for students who are not native speakers of English and who want to do their written English. The aim of the course is to develop students' ability to edit their own writing and to identify the use of high-frequency non-idiomatic English. Intensive and individual practice will be provided for students from various language backgrounds.

Readings and Compositions Colwrit R4A (4 units)
Requirements offered: Spring 2019, Autumn 2018, Spring 2018. This writing seminar fulfills the first half of Reading and Composition requirements. This course is designed to offer students structured, sustainable and highly articulated practices in the recursive processes needed in reading, critical analysis, and writing. Students will read five long text books that are thematically related, or equivalent, taken from various genres, in addition to various non-print sources. In response to these materials, they will make a number of short works leading to three more essays - exposition and argumentation.

Colwrit R4B Reading, Composition, and Research (4 units)
Requirements offered: 2019 Summer Second Week 6 Session, 2019 Spring, 2018 Fall. A seminar that satisfies the second half of Reading & Composition requirements, R4B offers structured and sustainable practice in the processes used in reading, critical analysis, and writing. Students engage with thematic related material from various genres and media. In response, they make shorter works that lead to longer expository and / or argumentative essays. Students develop research questions, compile research essays, collect, evaluate, and synthesize information from various sources. Elements of the research process - proposals, annotated bibliographies, abstracts, lists of quoted works, etc. - submitted with the final report in the research portfolio. Students write a prose of at least 32 pages.

Colwrit 5A English Study: Broadway Musical (3 units)
Conditions offered: Summer 2019 Second Week 6 Session, Summer 2018 Second Week 6 Session, Summer 2017 Second Week 6 Session. Through Broadway musical media, this course will help students improve vocabulary, reading, writing, understanding listening, taking notes, and oral communication. Students will see musicals (video and direct); learn about their plot, song, and lyrics; examine the historical context represented in each section; write a review / criticism; and work on oral presentation skills. The course includes a component of field work.

Colwrit 5B English Study: Drama (3 units)
Provisions offered: Not yet offered. This course explores the language, structure and performance of drama. Students use film, television, journals, current events, controversial issues, and personal experience as source material for writing and performing. Course activities include character training, storyline, and dialogue; and close reading and analysis of academic reading. Course objectives: learn academic conventions to write, improve critical / analytical reading skills, and sharpen oral skills for university success.

Colwrit 5C English Study: Film (3 units)
Conditions offered: Summer 2019 Second Week 6 Session, Summer 2018 Second Week 6 Session, Summer 2017 Second Week 6 Session. Students will have the opportunity to practice critical thinking, listening, speaking, reading, writing, and vocabulary skills by learning contemporary problems and learning about how film-script elements, cinematography, sound, lighting, and more - work together to help build stories and film themes. The course includes a component of field work. Some parts: placement based on assessment Day 1 of interests and needs.

Colwrit 5D English Study: Literature (3 units)
Conditions offered: Summer 2019 Second Week 6 Session, Summer 2018 Second Week 6 Session, Summer 2017 Second Week 6 Session. Literature offers a good opportunity to understand social and interpersonal conflict, develop vocabulary, and improve analytical skills. Designed for non-native English speakers, this course involves students in close reading and discussion of conflict in the literature. Students are expected to read, write, and talk about texts and themes discussed in class. The course includes a component of field work. Some parts: placement based on assessment Day 1 of interests and needs.
