Berkeley's Teaching English to Multilingual Students. Are you interested in teaching English to multilingual students abroad or in the United States? Or, maybe you just want to learn more about teaching and learning English? College Writing Programs and Education have worked together to offer minor or certificates that can be obtained in one summer.

Required Programs of Summer Minor: Educating for the 21st Century - Teaching English to Multilingual Students.

In Session A (May 28 - July 5 2019), all online courses;
  1. Education W142 (online): Education in the Global World. Course Description: Learn about school and education perspectives from around the world, examine educational programs and initiatives that target a diverse student population. Students will involve diverse cultural resources and create global education projects.
  2. W143 Writing College (online): ESL / EFL Teaching Foundation. Course Description: Learn about the basic principles and practices of English education both in local and global contexts. This course covers the theories and methods behind teaching reading, writing, listening, and speaking to a diverse population of English students in a variety of academic contexts.

Teaching English to Multilingual Students.

In Session D (July 8 - August 16, 2019), all online courses;

  1. Education W140 AC (online): The Art of Making Meanings. Course Description: Learn about literacy theory and digital learning, network environments, and research methods in education. Students work on a number of creative activities to represent main course ideas, and write final Case Study papers that document their field work experience. This course satisfies one practicum experience and the American Cultural requirements of UC Berkeley.
  2. W144 Writing College (online): Practicum in Teaching English. Course Description: This course will give students an understanding of theory and practice in teaching English to students from multilingual backgrounds. Course topics will include reflective practice, teacher decision-making, student-centered classrooms, and general knowledge about learning and language cognition. Field experience will include working with students in the student's geographic area, working with practicum instructors and local instructors. Students can produce a portfolio of plans for observation, teaching, and reflection notes.
  3. W145 Writing College (online): English Language Material and Assessment. Course Description: You will learn to develop teaching materials and assessment tools in teaching English in both local and global contexts. This course covers the theories and methods behind choosing, adapting, and writing materials that are suitable for a diverse population of English students in a variety of academic contexts.

You can take all courses in one summer, or spread them for two or more summers. Even if you are not pursuing a minor or certificate, you are welcome to join these classes individually if you are interested.

Visiting students will be offered a certificate after successfully completing the five courses. You can register through the Summer Session.
